MURMURS

A new addition to the stable of Drone bits and pieces, Murmurs will be snippets of interesting news I've picked up throughout my perusal of music-related media. Hope you learn something new from it!
  • Mercury Rev are making their way to Australia for the first time in in over three years... to play support to Coldplay on their Viva La Vida tour. Being a reasonably huge fan of Mercury Rev, it's no surprise that my mouth was agape in both excitement and befuddlement upon hearing this news. Hopefully some solo sideshows will be in order, because there's no way on earth you'll find me at a Coldplay concert. At least the band have some decent taste...

  • Perennial Drone favourites, Primal Scream are involved in an amazingly awesome project. They'll be releasing a limited pressing of Suicide's Diamonds, Furcoat, Champagne on March 30 as part of a year long series of Suicide tribute recordings from blastfirstpetite to mark Alan Vega's 70th birthday. This particular pressing will be limited to 3000, and will be joined by recordings by artists such as Peaches, Grinderman, Spiritualized and Liars. Bruce Springsteen and the Horrors have already recorded and released covers (Dream Baby's Dream - see clip below and Shadazz respectively). This project and my ears are a match made in heaven.

  • The Saints and Laughing Clowns legend Ed Kuepper has joined Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, replacing Mick Harvey on guitar duties. Like Blixa Bargeld, the Bad Seeds will not be the same without Harvey, who will hopefully continue to work on his solo material and play some shows (in his hometown of Melbourne please!), but Kuepper is an obvious fit for the band.

  • Nine Inch Nails have announced their current world tour will most likely be their last. Joining them in North America will be the reformed-yet-again Jane's Addiction. I was keen to see NIN on the Australian leg of the tour, but alas, can't bring myself to pay so much for a show at the awfully ventilated, awful-for-short-people Festival Hall. If Deerhunter were supporting, I'd be there though - no complaints.

That's really bizarre about Mercury Rev - surely they'll do some sideshows?

I hope so, but I think the Coldplay show is really soon... like 2 weeks away? I have no idea. I'll definitely be going if they do sideshows. I think we should go together!

Absolutely. I missed them last time as they only played Splendour and then supported the Finn Brothers at their Opera House show which sold out ludicrously quickly.

I reckon Donahue would be superdramatic as hell live - awesome!

Yeah, all his gesticulating - I know it puts a lot of people off the live show, but sounds good to me! Man, maybe they don't like Australia... they don't seem to tour it properly!

Aahhh Festival Hall. I've missed many bands because i refuse to go there. I'm headed to Soundwave so hopefully NIN will rock the showgrounds, not really a better venue though.
