INTERVIEW: MORNING AFTER GIRLS

Martin N Sleeman, guitarist from epic ex-pat psychedelic band the morning after girls recently answered a few questions for Drone about the band's impending new release, Alone. Recorded with legendary producer Alan Moulder, the album is sure to pique the ears of many an avid alternative rock listener. Head over to the band's myspace page to listen to a sample of what's to come, and revisit this post for a free download of the title track from 2005's Shadows Evolve.

You're releasing a new album very soon. Pardon the vague question, but could you tell us about it? Where was it recorded? Are there any particular influences on the sound and/or themes connecting the entire album?
The album is called alone. It was recorded in Melbourne, and it was mixed and produced with Alan Moulder, in London. It's always a blessing to share one long journey with many parts of the world. Life takes you in different directions, and so then, does music. This album scopes the most important things that every person faces every day; pure, naked, vulnerable, loving, existence.

How much has the Morning After Girls sound evolved since the album Shadows Evolve?
It's evolved in the sense that our experiences have evolved, as they always have. Life shapes everything that we do. There is no separation. Our passions weave in and out of each other. Sound is in everything, so everything is in sound.

Can you tell us about the band's current lineup? We know some members left and formed the Black Ryder. Is there currently a solid lineup or does it tend to change from time to time?
We are more solid than ever. We have a great band, with the welcomed inclusion of Mr EJ Hagen, Alexander White, and Anthony Johnson.

How often do you make it back to Australia? Do you forsee a tour down here for the new album?
We go there when we need to, or when we are afforded to. I forsee us playing some shows there this year.

You are based mainly in New York and the States now. Has geography had any influence on the material the band is producing?
I believe that everything influences everything. The same characteristic flows through all things in life. So, yes.

For those not lucky enough to have seen the Morning After Girls live, can you describe a typical live experience? What should people expect from a MAG gig?
Firstly, just feel whatever you want to feel. If you come to our show, expect to see five people sharing what they love most in life - sharing their hearts and souls through the beauty of music.
