DOLLY ROCKER MOVEMENT ALBUM LAUNCH

by Beth Keating

Last Friday night I headed to the Curtin Band Room in Carlton to attend the Dolly Rocker Movement's Melbourne launch of their newest long-player, Our Days Mind The Tyme. My recollections are, predictably, a tad blurry, but I know I had an absolutely fantastic time. The band were supported by some incredibly fantastic psychedelic acts, the first called Dreaming of Ghosts. These guys completely blew me away - go, go, go to their website and download some tracks. Dark and droning (how appropriate), these guys create a murky, swampy, almost-art rock sound reminiscent of two of my favourite bands - The Scientists and The Black Angels combined.

Other supports The Demon Parade and The Sun Blindness were also more than solid, encompassing various aspects of the psychedelic sound. The Dolly Rocker Movement, as always, were so much fun - I think it's impossible to leave a show of theirs without a smile plastered on your face. They articulate so perfectly the most positive parts of the psychedelic music scene. Like so many contemporaries, they wear their influences openly, but they do it purely, making them so much more than just revivalists of a particular sound. Proof of the band's popularity was made obvious when the amount of people in the room literally tripled in size after they began playing. They'll be back in Melbourne in about a month, playing with Downhills Home at Northcote Social Club. There are also a few dates in other locations before then. Go!
