WATCH: MIFF - ALL TOMORROW'S PARTIES

All Melburnians will be at least slightly familiar with the Melbourne International Film Festival, running throughout the city between the end of July and beginning of August. This year, alternative, post-punk and underground rock lovers are well-catered for, with a variety of features, short-film mixtapes and documentaries on the program.

Not to be missed is the documentary, All Tomorrow's Parties. Critically hailed, this film explores the legendary festival - revered by fans and artists alike - by taking the viewer on a journey through the event's ten year history. Featuring footage and music from acts such as The Stooges, Sonic Youth, The Dirty Three, Mogwai, The Boredoms, Slint, Shellac, Grinderman and Animal Collective, this 82 minute paen to the world's most independent major music event is a compilation of over 200 filmmakers' experiences. Footage was shot by both fans and musicians, including major contributions from Tarnation director Johnathan Caouette, and Vincent Moon.

The film coincides with the festival's tenth anniversary. All Tomorrow's Parties consistently brings together the most exciting bands at the forefront of the alternative music scene, and the most legendary. Not catering to any kind of corporate sponsorship, it gives music fans what they want - reunions from some of the most cult-followed acts, performances from a wide variety of obscure artists and lineups worth frothing at the mouth over time after time. For alternative music lovers, there is no better festival than All Tomorrow's Parties.

Bittersweet, this documentary's inclusion in the MIFF's lineup follows recent news that the festival will not be returning to Australia in 2010. Truly, an absolute shame.

All Tomorrow's Parties shows as part of the Melbourne International Film Festival on Saturday 25th July, 9.15 at ACMI, and Thursday 6th August, 9.15 at Greater Union. Head to the Festival's official site to book tickets.
